A bright spot in digital service delivery this year has been the rollout of the federal government’s Direct File service, plus the plan to make it permanent.
Government-run direct tax filing allows taxpayers to file their taxes online for free, aiming to save families time and money. It can also help ensure access to benefits like the Earned Income Tax Credit for those who are eligible.
Beyond the spotlight of federal-level direct file, a connected effort was underway at the state level. Code for America worked with Arizona and New York on FileYourStateTaxes — an effort that seeks to expand to other states next year and in the future.
As direct tax filing moves forward and expands at both the federal and state levels, we’re having a panel discussion exploring topics such as:
Success: What made Direct File a success — especially compared to some other government technology projects that have had more challenging rollouts? How can these practices be applied elsewhere?
Scale: Direct File started out for a limited set of taxpayers. How can it scale to more users and those with more complex tax situations?
States: What does the path look like for achieving state direct file nationwide?
We’ll also see a demonstration of FileYourStateTaxes, and Nava’s Chief Delivery Officer, Jodi Leo, will offer opening remarks.
